Word came out last week that two of Ed Rendell's Cabinet appointees were being challenged on their ethics. Kathleen McGinty of DEP and Michael DiBerardinis of Conservation and Natural Respurces saw their nominations withdrawn over the controversy. The issue was over state contracts awarded to groups that employ the Secretary's spouses. This, to me, is an obvious conflict of interest. Now the Ethics Commission has weighed in and says this is a violation.
The groups involved have received $4 million in grants. This shouldn't even be an issue. If you're a Cabinet Secretary and your spouse works for an organization you cannot award contracts and grants to that organization. This is called nepotism. These two have three options: withdraw from the Governor's Cabinet, grant no new contratcs or grants to these organizations, or their spouses must find new employment. This is a no brainer.
