March 02, 2008

Cynthia Baughman

The Obama staff has landed in Berks County too, with the same organizing skills and embrace of the local grassroots volunteers that you describe in this report from Philly. On Saturday, March 1, Berks County supporters met with our newly-arrived organizer, a veteran of the South Carolina & Georgia campaigns. Sixty local volunteers streamed into the 18th Ward Democratic Club in Reading for a 9:30am-1pm Leadership Training session, and more arrived for the 1:30-4 Voter Registration Drive.

It was a beautiful day: our group was diverse in age, gender, race, ethnicity, and levels of campaign experience. We had leaders of local progressive activist groups, community leaders, church leaders, Democratic Committee members, lawyers, union members, high school students, college students, and senior citizens. We had volunteers from Lancaster, Schuykill, Berks, and Montgomery counties working together. Joy, our aptly named Obama staff member, led everyone through a leadership training program that resulted in the formation of regional teams, in which everyone took on responsibility for some aspect of the local campaign.

Berks for Obama formed on Feb. 11, 2007, the day after Sen. Obama announced his candidacy. We have been working, and building throughout the past year, using the online organization tools at, and meeting face-to-face, and volunteering at local events, registering voters, and distributing Obama materials. When the campaign arrived, this grassroots group was ready to seamlessly merge with the national campaign, and the national campaign was ready to empower, support and guide us. It's thrilling to be a part of this campaign.

Sorry I missed your local event but I had to be in center city for another meeting so this way I killed two birds with one stone.
