All of a sudden we can't control our nuclear weapons and their components. This week we learned several switches designed for nose cones were shipped to Taiwan by mistake. As if this weren't disturbing enough it took forever to determine they were missing and in Taiwan. The very cavalier attitude about the highly classified missile components sent to the Chinese nation instead of helicopter batteries raises serious questions about the competence of our strategic nuclear arsenal.
When we combine this fiasco with the air transport of several nuclear bombs aboard a B-52 flying over the Midwest, are we safe from ourselves? Do those guarding our most dangerous and closely guarded defense systems and weapons competent? Have we deprived these DoD programs of funding due to the war in Iraq? We already know many routine expenditures for Defense operations have been cash strapped by the war. Have the operational budgets for strategic weapons systems also been cut and, if so, is that resulting in these errors?
These are questions for Secretary Gates and I urge our Senators to ask them.
