Wyoming's New Senator A Pennsylvanian

Wyoming’s New Senator

Dr. John A. Barasso III has been appointed to replace the late Craig Thomas. Gov.David Freudenthal chose Barasso from a list of three possibilities. Barasso is a native Pennsylvanian, from Reading. Having grown up in the suburban community of Pennside, he is an orthopedic surgeon who has served in the Wyoming State Senate.  He plans to run for the seat next year in a special election.

Barasso is a conservative Republican who is anti-choice. Wyoming is a western state with a strong anti-environmental stance and a place where people don’t trust government. No wonder with clowns like these in power.

Roger Lund Elected Chair of Adams County Democrats

The Adams County Democrats have elected Roger Lund of New Oxford their new Chair.  Congratulations go out to Roger.  He's a friend and a fellow "original" Deaniac.  He's also the second openly gay County Chair along with Beth Shupp-George of Franklin County.  Here's the press release:

GETTYSBURG, Pa.—A New Oxford resident and business owner was elected
chair of Pennsylvania's Adams County Democratic Committee (ACDC)
Monday night. Roger Lund defeated former party chair John Rarig of
Orrtanna. Lund takes over from Mike Pavlovich of Biglerville, who
resigned for health reasons.

"This is an exciting time for Democrats in Adams County," Lund
said. "We have excellent candidates to offer to the county in the
next election. I believe Adams voters will elect both of ou! r county
commissioner candidates in 2007, because experience matters to
voters. So does fiscal responsibility."

The Democratic commission candidates are Lisa Moreno and Marty
Qually.

Lund has been active in Adams County politics since his appointment
to the Adams County Democratic Committee in 2003. In 2006, he was
elected to the executive board of ACDC.

In addition, Lund managed the 19th District congressional campaign
of Phil Avillo of York. Most recently, he has chaired the ACDC
political action committee and he was vice-chair of the Gettysburg
Area Democracy for America. As owner of the Christmas Haus in New
Oxford, Lund has served on the board of the New Oxford Chamber of
Commerce.

"My participation in this process, indeed my election to this
office, is a direct result of the call to action from Democratic
National Committee
chair Howard Dean," said Lund. " When I founded
the Dean for America chapter in Gettysburg in 2003, my life and
level of commitment changed. I thank Governor Dean for that."

"As we see Adams County grow and change, it is important that we
reflect those changes in our policies and services," he said. "The
Adams County Democratic Committee is moving toward meeting those
challenges head-on. It is an honor to be elected to lead us forward."

Tim Holden's Get Well Reading List

My Congressman Tim Holden is recuperating from an operation on two herniated discs.  According to WFMZ he's stuck in bed, bored stiff and catching up on his reading.  As a dutiful constituent I thought I'd do him a service this time.  I've put together a reading list he can use to allay his boredom and use this time productively.

The United States Constitution.  Since Holden voted for torture and the repeal of habeas corpus I think the first item needs to be this document.  Also, please concentrate on the Fourth Amendment.  While you're at it you can add The Declaration of Independence, The Magna Carta, and The Code of Hammurabi.   Together they form the basis of our rule of law.  Good reading for a lawmaker.

The Greatest Story Ever Sold, Frank Rich.  How the Bush Administration lied us, and some unnamed Congressmen, into war.

Sick, by Jonathon Cohn.  My current reading material.  It's a tale of our broken health care system.

Homophobia, Byrne Fone.  Maybe this will gain him a better understanding of glbt issues so he won't keep voting for gay marriage amendments.  I do give him credit for voting positively on the hate crimes law though.  Perhaps he's coming around.

Blackwater, Jeremy Scahill.  Meet and get scared by the rise of George Bush's own private mercenary army.

Blinded By the Right, David Brock.  Essential reading Brock, a former GOP media operative, reveals what they do and how they do it.

Fiasco, Thomas E. Ricks.  The tale about how we lost the Iraq war.

Frustrated Sheehan Leaves Anti-War Movement

Cindy Sheehan, who singlehandedly awakened many Americans to the futility of the Iraq War and the incompetence of the Bush Administration, is leaving the anti-war movement.  Frustrated with Democrats refusal to act last week she is giving up.  I can't say I blame her.  That vote incensed and infuriated everyone.  Many people are asking "where do we turn now?"

There's no good answer for that question.  Mine is simply that this means we have to continue working to change the Democratic Party.  70% of the American people want an end to this war.  If we're unwilling to listen to those 70% we have some very serious problems.

Cindy Sheehan was the catalyst that signaled the beginning of the end for the Bush Administration.  Riding high after 9/11 and the initial success in Iraq, most people ignored the fact the President had lied us into this war and that our people were dying for nothing.  When Cindy lost her son she wanted the answer to one simple question:  why?  George W. Bush refused to meet her and answer.  Cindy decided to camp outside his ranch until he did and that was followed by Katrina which was followed by a succession of scandals and exposures which completely unraveled this Administration.

Cindy Sheehan was the person who galvanized an entire movement and she deserves great credit.  The target of much hatred and animosity by the right wing for standing up, she's had enough.  I cannot say I blame her, one person can only take so much abuse.  Still, she was heroic and a role model for many.  What she did took great courage:  speak truth to power.  Thank you Cindy.

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day when we dedicate an afternoon of barbecues and parades for remembering our fallen soldiers, airmen and sailors.  Those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in our Armed Services.  Every month we're adding about 100 new names to those fallen with no end in sight.  This Memorial Day let's all dedicate ourselves to stopping the endless flights like this arriving from Iraq:

Too many of our fields have filled with marble monuments.

Each of us, couple with our friends and neighbors can change the direction this country took in 2000.

Jerry Falwell

I've decided to begin a fund to collect money to send Jerry Falwell an air conditioning system.  I suspect he probably needs one about now.  The bigoted, hateful "preacher" dropped dead yesterday.  Good riddance is all I can say.  Falwell is one of the those most responsible for dividing Americans, demonizing everyone he didn't like, perverting Christianity into Neo Christianity, and injecting faith based fundamentalism into governmental programs.

The constant erosion of the concept of separation of church and state began with his Moral Majority.  It has progressed to a point where a Jewish army veteran was recently subjected to evangelical conversion attempts while being treated at a VA hospital.  Your tax dollars are now being used by government agencies to fund groups providing social services.  If you're in need of these services you have to attend Bible study sessions or be exposed to fundamentalist missionaries attempting to convert you to their faith.

Falwell made many outrageous, bigoted, hateful statements.  He was lost in his fantasy world where gays, secular Americans, atheists and others caused 9/11 and every natural disaster.  Every hurricane hitting Florida was due to the gay days at Disney World, for example.  He ignored the fact hurricanes had been hitting Florida for millennia.  While hosting the old CNN political program Crossfire he actually said the Iraq War was going well if you watched it on Fox instead.  As if simply watching Fox's coverage changed the reality of that horror.

He referred to NOW as the National Organization of Witches, totally demonized gays and lesbians, told Muslims that their holy leader Muhammad was a terrorist, was an infamous anti-semite, and incited much of the intolerance and violence directed at those he condemned.  People like Matthew Shepard and James Byrd were brutally murdered because of people like Jerry Falwell.  He didn't give a damn about the people who were hurt by his incitements as long as his cash registers continued to sing with contributions.

I'm reminded of the Biblical passage about rich men and the eye of a needle about now.  Not only was Jerry Falwell a rich man he made his riches by demonizing people who, mostly, were unable to fight back.  Those he referred to as responsible for all the sins of the world didn't have his television platform, public speeches and access to press interviews.  Jerry Falwell had enough money to buy his own university but I bet he wasn't able to buy an eye of a needle large enough to pass through after he hit that floor yesterday.

Does anyone know how to send an air conditioner to hell?  Does anyone care Falwell might want one?  Send your contributions to those organizations he condemned and demonized, NOW, HRC, the Anti-Defamation League, etc.  Go ahead, now is the time to put some heat on Falwell's organization.

Local VA Medical Center Problems Exposed

This is a guest article.  The author is anonymous because of the sensitive nature of some of the information, their position, and the distinct possibility of retribution.

Deferring the Appointment of the Director of the Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Hospital

The appointment (on April 29, 2007) of the new Director of the Pittsburgh VAMC should be deferred until investigations into EEOC violations and other Personal Prohibitive Practice violations on the part of this individual are fully investigated.

There are ongoing investigations at this time at the Lebanon Veterans Administration Medical Center by the Office of Special Counsel concerning retaliation and reprisals against employees who have spoken out against her.  The accusations involve matters of waste, fraud, abuse of power, and racial, age and gender discrimination.

The current scandals involving the Department of Justice and the debacle at Walter Reed Army Hospital, which also revealed the fiascos at many VA facilities make it imperative that persons unfit to do the nation's business should not be permitted to take positions of high office and be promoted, much less be allowed to serve our Veterans.   Staff who have worked at the Lebanon VA Medical Center refer to this woman as the "Absent Director."  She has seldom been on the job while posted at Lebanon.

When she has been there she has exhibited poor leadership and management skills, wasting money and resources.   She has also retaliated against employees and demotes or fires anyone who speaks up.  A complete department was dissolved as a vendetta against the head of that service, a competent woman.  The safety officer (low on the totem pole), a veteran of 28 years on the job, was scapegoated and fired for this person's own failings when the Lebanon VAMC was cited for safety violations.  When it's accreditation was restricted by JCAHO (a serious and damning matter for any hospital administration) she penalized the minor employee instead of the Chief of Quality Management who should have been held accountable for the failure.  That person, though was one of her cronies.

A project to build a Women's Health Clinic at a cost of $1.5 million resulted in services to 1500-3000 male veterans being interrupted and they were forced to go to other medical providers and clinics.   Her hubris resulted in service to only 300-500 women while displacing so many men.  An entire floor of the VA was used for such little purpose and at the cost of medical care to so many male veterans.  Meanwhile these women were forced to abandon their previous medical providers and clinic.  Many had to travel from Camp Hill, Lancaster, York and Reading to go to Lebanon for their care without their consent.

She did these actions to massage the numbers of unique users and to satiate and humor her unappeasable abuse of power.

Another example of waste and mismanagement was the purchase of scanners and retinal cameras at a cost of millions of dollars.  These were left sitting in warehouses and clinics because there was no planning to house them or staff trained to operate them.

The VA remained in egregious violation of the HIPAA regulations for over two years at one of it's clinics.  This Director was more concerned about artwork than patient's privacy rights at a meeting called to address the issue.  One attendee commented "Is this Director always so clueless?"  Patient's privacy rights have been routinely violated.

Primary care doctors were denied pay increases while her cronies who had little direct action with patients were given very generous increases.  Primary care doctors are where the rubber meets the road in medicine.  A senior physician was placed on administrative leave for nearly 200 days at taxpayer expense then fired because the doctor refused to drop a case against the Director for waste, fraud, abuse of power, and EEOC violations.  The case ended with a cash settlement and the doctor's resignation.

This pattern of hubris, retaliation, and reprisals is rampant and goes unchecked throughout the Veterans Administration system simply because the regulations governing the VA are written as to embolden and encourage administrators to run roughshod over any employee who dares to question their conduct, motives, or lack of integrity.  This is the people's business and that's what should be paramount.  Instead it is almost impossible to hold them accountable or liable.  When they are it is the taxpayer who bears the cost of the settlements.

VA employees who have had similar experiences and see or witness similar irregularities, injustices or potentially criminal violations should contact their Member of Congress and Senators to have the VA regulations reviewed.  There needs to be a system in place by which these administrators are held responsible both morally, ethically, and fiscally for the damage they do to the institution and lives of hard working employees who serve our heroic veterans day in and day out.

Considering the recent exposure of the VA medical care establishment the public no longer has confidence in any government organization or the belief that our honored veterans are getting proper care and treatment.  It is sad that investigating organizations have to have their feet held to the fire or be prodded out of their inertia and forced to act only when the media get involved.

Molly Ivins

I think the best thing that someone can say at your funeral or wake is that the world is a better place because you were here.  Molly Ivins passed away at 62 from breast cancer and the world is a better place because she was here.  Godspeed Ms. Ivins.

NY Times Profiles Chris Carney

The New York Times has a profile up on our own Chris Carney D-10.  Doesn't that sound great?  A Democrat representing the 10th Congressional District.  The article begins with a review of Carney's work at the Pentagon under Doug Feith's controversial group which stovepiped intelligence on Iraq.  As much contempt as I have for Feith and the crap he created for Cheney and Bush prior to the war I also realize Chris was assigned to this task and simply performed his duties as a military officer.

Carney says he still believes there was a small connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda.  He believes the Iraqi dictator was smart enough not to slam this door closed as he also did in other strategic areas.  Whatever you believe about Saddam he didn't survive as long as he did because he was stupid and did a lot of stupid things.  He was very smart and very much a survivor who knew to keep all his options open.

Obviously there were no substantive connections or anything at all related to 9/11 between Iraq and Al Qaeda as we were lied to pre-war.  It's the President's fault for allowing Feith's office to even exist and conduct the operations they performed.  Going around the established intelligence community and bypassing skilled analysts resulted in cooking the intelligence.  This wasn't Carney's fault, it was Bush's.
