The big deal about GonzalesGate is about subverting the rule of law. In the course of the scandal we've also learned about other abuses and illegalities. One of the most disturbing revelations, however, is the disclosure by James Comey that the White House Counsel (Gonzales) and Chief of Staff (Andrew Card) attempted to pressure and intimidate a critically ill Attorney General into approving an illegal domestic wiretapping program.
One aspect of this has been troubling me. Comey's testimony before Congress revealed that the Department of Justice refused to approve the legality of what the President and NSA were doing. Thirty top DOJ officials were prepared to resign en masse unless they altered the program. Supposedly they did and Justice wound up signing off on its legality.
What the heck was the White House doing under the auspices of the NSA that was so egregious even John Ashcroft wouldn't allow it to continue? This was an AG who was so extreme he made someone put fabric over a statue of Lady Justice to hide an exposed breast. We've since found out DOJ simply hung Lady Justice out to dry.
I want to know what was actually going on and how many Americans were illegally and unconstitutionally spied upon. Why isn't anyone pursuing this? Today's report on past CIA abuses and scandals reminds me of what has happened historically when such abuses were allowed and permitted by renegade Oval Offices. The people have a right to know what was done in our name and to whom. We must know this so we can demand our Representatives and Senators hold those responsible accountable. We know we cannot rely on the Justice Department to prosecute Republicans so Congress must assume the task. The only method they have is impeachment proceedings.
