Senator Larry Craig, about to go on a rehab program to purge the gayness from his being, announced he may not resign after all. Our own Sen. Arlen Specter has convinced him he may fight the charges leveled against him and win. This shows an appalling lack of understanding of the public outrage over the Senator's behavior. The gay community is outraged because Craig exposed the secret code. Activists are outraged over his hypocrisy, the public over the fact men's bathrooms have been used for sex and they didn't know about this.
Wives all across America are now left wondering about that smile on their husband's face when he came back from the john. Was it just a particularly good bowel movement or did something else happen in there? No wonder he and that hot number across the restaurant went to the bathroom at the same time! As bad as this is please don't anyone tell these women about glory holes!
No, Senator Specter, the outrage over Larry Craig isn't so much what he did in that bathroom, it's about what he did in Washington. When a closeted gay man is virulently homophobic and runs on a platform of family values while he's playing with someone else's family jewels under the partition America gets mad. America got mad because he tried to use his influence as a United States Senator to avoid getting charged after he got caught. America is made because he tried to excuse his behavior by claiming entrapment after peering through the slit, liking what he saw then going for the gold.
Yes, perhaps he can fight the charges and win. What did he actually do that was illegal? He tapped his silver slippers to a few show tunes being pumped into the men's room for his pleasure. He attempted to communicate that he wanted the other man to provide his genitals for a bit of relief and then he got busted. No outright lewd conduct was exhibited and he got busted for trying. That may be the legal case but it isn't the political one. The political firestorm here really has nothing to do with whether the cop busted him for sitting with a wide stance.
The fact someone of his stature was trolling for sex in an airport bathroom gave America the creeps. That's the issue.
