Spineless Congressional Democrats are beginning to awaken to their dismal approval ratings but not in time to save lives. The debacle in Iraq is now opposed by a large majority of Americans but the Democrats we elected last week have been deaf to our concerns. Instead of fighting to support the troops and bring them home they've become another rubber stamp for BushCo.
The only power Congress has left is the power of the purse but they keep refusing to exercise that remaining sliver of authority. Now the House has passed some sort of action for Iraq: a funding bill which requires the onset of troop withdrawals within a month. Let's get real about this: the only thing Congress should be funding now IS the withdrawal of forces. Nothing else should be funded unless it is required to facilitate that redeployment of troops.
Anything else is just another failure.
When the president vetoes the bill Democrats must simply keep resending the same bill. He cannot keep vetoing supplementals or begin including the money in the Pentagon budget where it should be anyway. The deaf Congressional members blocking an end to this conflict have to begin hearing from all of us.
Keep sending the same bridge bill. Even though it got voted down in the Senate, you send the same bill when they ask for it again. That's how you change the course of this war. And in the meantime, Im sure the President will hide behind and use and abuse our troops politically as he has so many times in the past. No more blank checks. Our military and families deserve better and a policy that is equal to sacifice. VICTORY IS TRANSITION, NOT OCCUPATION.
